Your Professional Status

Keeping your professional memberships and qualifications up-to-date shows employers that you take your professional development seriously. A good agency or employer will always verify your status with the professional body before making a job offer, so if you have let your memberships lapse, get them reinstated before starting to look for a new job.

Your Salary Expectations

Pitching yourself at the wrong salary level is likely to stall your job search. If you are not sure about market rates, do some research on the job boards or speak to a specialist agency to find out what you can realistically expect before applying for jobs.

Have You Prepared Your CV?

Fully review your CV rather than just adding in details of your latest role. If you have progressed your career since your last job move, it’s important to look at your CV as a whole to ensure it gives a fair reflection of your career to date and is giving the right message to potential employers.

There’s plenty of conflicting advice on CV writing, but so long as you are giving sufficient information for a recruiter to make an initial assessment on your skills and experience, you can’t go too far wrong. Content is always the most important consideration when writing a CV, so make sure it’s as accurate as possible, check your spelling and grammar and make sure there is enough detail on each job to give a clear idea of your roles and responsibilities.

The Application Process

Most people will apply for jobs directly and will also register with a specialist agency to ensure that they get maximum market exposure and access to the best job opportunities. It’s so easy to apply online that it can also be easy to lose track of your applications. It’s always better to apply for a handful of suitable jobs, tailoring your CV to highlight relevant experience, and where possible, following up with a phone call to discuss your application.

Preparing For The Interview

Preparation is key to a successful interview. Think about the scope role you have applied for, how it fits into the wider business and the challenges the company is likely to face. Once you have a clear understanding of the role, think about how your skills and experience could benefit the organisation. When you arrive for your interview, you should try to have some examples of your work experience in mind that you can use to demonstrate your suitability for the role.
